Your First TRT Appointment: What to Expect | MWC Virginia

Your first TRT visit, step by step

Walking into a TRT clinic for the first time feels a little weird. You don’t know what they’ll ask, what they’ll test, or how long you’ll be there. So here’s exactly what happens, based on a typical first visit at an in-person clinic in Virginia.

Plan for about an hour total.

Before your appointment

Not much prep needed, but a few things help:

During the visit

Blood work (15-20 minutes)

Clinics with on-site labs draw your blood right there and can turn results around within the hour. Key markers include total testosterone, no-cost testosterone, estradiol, PSA, CBC, metabolic panel, and thyroid function. At a clinic without in-house labs, you’d go to a separate lab first and wait days for results.

Physician appointment (20-30 minutes)

The physician goes through your lab results, medical history, symptoms, and what you’re hoping treatment will do. This should be a real conversation, not a five-minute rubber stamp. At Men’s Wellness Centers, the doctor you see specializes in men’s hormone health, not a GP who does TRT on the side.

Treatment discussion

If your labs confirm low testosterone, your physician talks through options. Injections, gels, and other delivery methods each have trade-offs in terms of convenience, absorption, and cost. Your doctor explains the differences and recommends what makes sense for your situation. Costs are laid out before you decide anything.

After your first visit

Many men who qualify start treatment the same day. Follow-up blood work is typically scheduled at 6-8 weeks to see how you’re responding. After that, periodic lab rechecks keep your dosing dialed in. Ongoing monitoring and adjustments are usually included in comprehensive TRT programs.
